While living in Northern Manitoba during the mid-1960s, Daphne witnessed first hand the displacement and cultural upheaval of the Chemahawin Cree, whose lands were flooded by the damming of the Saskatchewan River. She felt the need to respond to a community searching for its roots and contemporary relevance.

This response was manifested in a series of ink drawings recording life on the reserve, which included images of the people and their subsistence activities. These images, done in 1967, have become known as “The Series of the North.”
